Laine started at ground level on her improbable trip to upset popular incumbent Christopher Cox: handing out leaflets door to door. On her quest, she praises the Democratic Families First agenda and its focus on education, seniors and crime prevention. Laine thinks more educational and job-training programs will help solve social problems such as crime, poverty, underemployment and racial tension. But in a district that gave George Bush his highest vote percentage in California in 1992, Laine has a tough row to hoe.

A proud Irish American who calls himself a "recovering Republican," Farrell dates his political conversion to what he believes was a Reagan Administration cover-up of the seriousness of the 1979 accident at the Three-Mile Island nuclear plant. To win this race, the long shot Farrell would need a mass conversion to the Democratic party in the 48th, where registered Republicans outnumber Democrats 2-to-1.

A Representative since 1982, Packard shifted from the 43rd District to the 48th in 1992 as a result of redistricting. After 14 years on the Hill, he has earned a reputation as a deficit hawk and critic of legislative pork. He also leans right on social issues such as illegal immigration, which he is determined to thwart with more border-patrol agents and fewer welfare benefits.
