Dornan is a right-wing master of rhetoric who preaches family values and military might. A perpetually partisan critic, he has hounded President Clinton for his draft record and homosexuals for their nontraditional life-style. After washing out on the presidential trail this year, Dornan also faces a tough congressional opponent.

Sanchez is a Santa Ana businesswoman who became a Democrat in 1992. While her Republican past lingers on in her belief in the need for tax reform, she also now believes that social services should be at least partially available to illegal immigrants and vows to fight cuts in Medicare and educational funding. The district is nearly 50% Latino and 48% Democrat, but it voted for Bush in 1992. Sanchez will need a large--and moderate--turnout to scare the nine-term Bob Dornan.
