An old-style dove and partisan Democrat, Brown is the longest serving Californian in Congress. Once chairman of the House Science Committee, he has made the space program a priority while ardently opposing space-based military systems. Yet winning his past several elections by increasingly slim margins--his 1994 victory was by 2,629 votes--Brown himself has been targeted as vulnerable by the G.O.P.

Wilde, an unwavering conservative, favors discontinuing the Endangered Species Act, downsizing the federal bureaucracy and imposing term limits. As a Superior Court judge, she is also comfortable making crime her No. 1 issue: she proposes to expand the death penalty and put more cops on the street. With support from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the national party and G.O.P. figureheads like Dan Quayle, Wilde is a strong candidate.

Calvert's a sturdy candidate in a new but already Republican-leaning district. In 1993 he became tabloid fodder when the Corona police caught him in his car with a convicted prostitute. Even then, he beat his Democratic opponent handily. This year he is eager to win an election based on issues alone.
