Have you ever noticed the poster hanging in Jamie Lee Curtis' bedroom in the original Halloween? It's a self-portrait by the Belgian painter James Ensor the perfect artist to dress up a horror movie, since he knew a thing or two about the grotesque. Ensor flourished in the late 19th century with canvases brimming with skulls, mocking puppets and laughing masks. The Modern's show provided a fascinating picture of an artist deeply in touch with his inner oddball.
