Despite endorsements by much of the G.O.P. leadership, including Newt Gingrich, Kelly had to endure a bitter primary battle, mostly over her "liberal" views on abortion--she is pro-choice. Still, considered a loyal Republican, the former professor of patient advocacy sides with her party on fiscal issues, promoting small businesses and supporting the balanced-budget amendment.

Klein retired from medicine after 25 years to campaign for Congress, hoping to find the right prescription for the 19th District. He thinks the G.O.P.-controlled House has been too extreme on social issues, especially health care. He also supports an assault-weapons ban and wants stronger environmental regulation. But Klein has a tough race in this district, where Republicans routinely win with a double-digit margin.

A political novice, Aggarwal has a doctorate in seismology and was one of the first people to predict an earthquake using scientific methods.
