Though the moderate Katsorhis admires incumbent Nita Lowey's record on women's rights and the environment, he says she hasn't done enough for the economy and emphasizes his endorsement of Bob Dole's plan for a 15% tax cut and enterprise zones. A former cop, Katsorhis is also tough on crime, advocating the death penalty for anyone who kills an on-duty law-enforcement officer.

Lowey was thrust into the spotlight at the Democratic convention, the only person besides Al Gore invited to speak twice. The attention has some insiders saying the energetic Lowey will give Senator Al D'Amato electoral fits in 1998. For the moment, she continues to to promote women's issues. In June she proposed a bill to give businesses a tax credit for providing women with counseling, legal and medical services and education about domestic violence.
