In 1989 the Senate impeached Hastings, then a district court judge, for, among other things, taking a $150,000 bribe--even though a 1983 criminal trial on the same charge had brought an acquittal. Many in the 23rd felt Hastings was treated unfairly, and he has had no problem winning two House terms. In Congress Hastings has a strongly liberal record; he recently won a $210 million allotment to help restore the Everglades.
