Davis served as deputy campaign manager for George W. Bush's re-election campaign and as an opposition researcher for the Republican National Committee. He met Palin at the end of 2008, when he joined her campaign staff. She hired him in early 2010 to vet the 92 Republicans Palin endorsed for the midterms.
