Sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and touted as the largest one-day insect festival in the U.S., BugFest draws some 25,000 people to Raleigh every year. The event features face painting, beekeeping workshops, arthropod Olympics and roach races. "Café Insecta" serves dishes "featuring creepy crawlers as a major ingredient." Three Bug Salad and Quivering Wax Worm Quiche sound gross, but the festival has cousins around the country (including one in Garfield Heights, Ohio, pictured here).
