The hippie one
Life on the road and life on the wing are kind of similar, when you think about it. Perhaps that's why the Caravan birdhouse, created by U.S. home décor company Barnstorm with a sheet-metal roof and solid-wood chassis, has been such a hit among chirpers and humans alike nearly 100,000 have been sold. Looks like camping is for the birds. www.firebox.com
The clever one
Trust the Danes to come up with a seamless blend of style and savvy. This sleek number, in glazed white terra-cotta, was created by Claus Jensen and Henrik Holbaek (a.k.a. Copenhagen design duo Tools) for homewares store Eva Solo. It comes with entrance-hole fittings in four sizes, catering to tenants as small as wrens or as big as sparrows. Heat-reflective, it keeps the chicks from frying in summer. www. evasolo.com
The luxury one
Hand-crafted in frost-resistant clay by British company Green & Blue, Birdball derives its shape from the spherical forms that blue tits and coal tits prefer to construct when left to make nests on their own. At about $60, this chic number doesn't come cheap, but some experts reckon there's no better answer to the nesting urge. www.birdball.co.uk
The arty one
Whoever flies home to this minimalist pad must be high in the pecking order. FredriksonStallard designed it in solid oak with a cast-aluminum twig for Thorsten van Elten, the hip and humorous London furniture boutique. Any bird landing here is bound to know its Richard Serra from its Donald Judd. www.thorstenvanelten.com
