This young former slave, known as Jackson, was attached to the 79th Infantry, U.S. Colored Troops, out of Port Hudson, La. This photo of him in a Union uniform was widely displayed alongside another shot, taken of him shortly after he was freed, that showed him in a disheveled state. The before-and-after shots were among the Union's most effective propaganda images.
