Commander
A young Ulysses S. Grant stands beside his tent at Cold Harbor, Va., in 1864. Forced to resign from the Army in 1854 over charges of drunkenness, Grant struggled in private life for seven years before finding his calling again when the war broke out. In this photo, he displays the self-confidence and resolve that would help him win numerous battles in the war and eventually lead him to the White House.
