The perils faced by impoverished Mexicans trying to enter the United States illegally were highlighted by the death of 14 would-be immigrants in the Arizona desert. The 14, part of a group of 28 abandoned in the desert without food or water by smugglers, died of heat exhaustion and exposure. The incident amplified calls for immigration reform in the U.S.
