When the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear his case, Timothy McVeigh knew it was the end of the line. On June 11th, the Oklahoma City bomber died quietly in the death chamber of the federal prison in Terre Haute. It was the first federal execution in 37 years. Outside the prison, some cheered, while others protested the use of the death penalty. One thing was clear: Most of America was desperate to move on from the pain McVeigh had inflicted on all of us.
