The United Nations convened a special session of its General Assembly for the world's leaders to confront the global AIDS crisis. More people die from AIDS every day in sub-Saharan Africa than perished in the Sept. 11 attacks in the U.S. Leaders pledged money and research in response to pleas from U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's call for a "war on AIDS."
