In 2001, Annan, along with the United Nations, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel committee noted their "work for a better organized and more peaceful world." The committee further distinguished the secretary-general by noting: "In an organization that can hardly become more than its members permit, he has made clear that sovereignty can not be a shield behind which member states conceal their violations."
