During his terms as Secretary-General, Annan devoted considerable attention to the issues plaguing the African continent. He worked to heal the wounds created by the civil war in Rwanda and sent a U.N. peacekeeping mission to Darfur, Sudan, above, where he worked with the government of Sudan to accept a transfer of power from the African Union peacekeeping mission to one managed by the United Nations.
