Since leaving the United Nations, Annan has continued to play a role in international diplomacy, with a particular emphasis on African issues. He has declared the fight against HIV/AIDS his "personal priority" and proposed a Global AIDS and Health Fund, which has since received some $1.5 billion in pledges and contributions. In 2008, he participated in negotiations to end civil unrest in Kenya, helping to broker a power-sharing agreement between Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki (left, above) and opposition leader Raila Odinga (right) and slowing a post-election crisis that claimed over a thousand lives.
