The real danger in the 1957 Republican split is that the Old Guard's noisy attack makes it seem wider than it is. "Some Republicans," says conservative Columnist David Lawrence, "mistakenly assume the wave of criticism is a tide, and instead of battling it, they swim with its political currents."
