Malcolm X is gunned down in Harlem, touching off violence between his followers and those of Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Black Muslims and Malcolm's onetime mentor. TIME concludes that Malcolm's radical preaching, his endorsement of violence and his murder amount to "a disaster to the civil rights movement."
