One of Oscar de la Renta's first dresses was commissioned in 1956 for Beatrice Lodge, the daughter of then-U.S. ambassador to Spain, John Davis Lodge, to wear at her coming out ball in Madrid. This white, tulle, double-tiered gown made the cover of LIFE magazine, resulting in a splashy debut for the young designer.
