After eight years behind bars, "Doctor Death" secured his parole in June 2007 by promising not to help anyone else commit suicide. Dr. Jack Kevorkian, who claimed to have helped some 130 people die in the 1990s, was charged with second-degree murder for helping administer a lethal dose of drugs to Thomas Youk, a 52-year-old man suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease, in 1998. The death was videotaped and shown on 60 Minutes along with an interview in which Kevorkian challenged prosecutors to charge him with a crime. He was eventually sentenced to 10-to-25 years. Though he has kept his promise and has not helped anyone else commit suicide, Kevorkian has held firm to the belief that assisted suicide should be a legal right. Oregon and Washington are the only states to allow assisted suicide, and then only in certain cases.
