Date: July 28 to October 13
Artist: Lorenzo Ghiberti
Venue: Art Institute of Chicago
The bronze panels that Lorenzo Ghiberti produced for the doors to the Baptistery of Il Duomo, the great cathedral in Florence, are groundbreaking works of the early Renaissance. Produced between 1425 and 1452, the "Gates of Paradise" depict scenes from the Old Testament with a new mastery of volume and perspective. After a restoration process that took 25 years to complete, three of the restored panels and four decorative border pieces are traveling to the U.S. for the first time, stopping first at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta through July 15.
