Release Date: July 20
Director: Adam Shankman
Starring: John Travolta, Queen Latifah
In this movie of the 2002 Broadway musical of the 1988 John Waters movie about the integration of a Baltimore TV dance party in the early 60s, John Travolta assumes the role of the chubby heroine's mother, first played on the stage by Harvey Fierstein. The filmography of director Alan Shankman doesn't inspire confidence (The Wedding Planner, A Walk to Remember, Bringing Down the House, Cheaper by the Dozen 2), but I hear Travolta is a hoot. There's nothing like the spectacle of a soulful stud from three decades ago morphing into a gargantuan drag queen. By now, Travolta has had so many comebacks in different guises, he could become his own line of Transformers.
