Date: June 16 to September 9
Artist: Pablo Picasso
Venue: Walker Art Center, Minneapolis
Although Picasso never set foot on U.S. soil, in the intense conclaves of the American avant-garde his example hung in the air like the moon, out of reach but never out of sight. And the question he always seemed to pose for them was not what to make of what he was doing, although that could be puzzling enough, but what more to make of it. This show identifies the routes by which Picasso came into the awareness of Arthur Dove, Stuart Davis Arshile Gorky, Willem DeKooning, Jackson Pollock and other American painters and the fierce uses they made of him.
