Mount Merapi, on the Indonesian island of Java, gushes searing hot lava and smoke down toward nearby villages. The volcano has been on high alert for seven weeks, prompting the evacuation of thousands of villagers who live within a four-mile radius. Hundreds of residents have refused to leave the area.
