Fiery Controversy
A fire broke out in Windsor Castle on Nov. 20, 1992, when a curtain caught fire from a spotlight. While there were no serious injuries, the fire caused extensive damage to the property, resulting in £36.5 million worth of repairs. Controversy broke out over the restoration, as many argued that the cost shouldn't be the taxpayers' burden. The following year it was announced that the repair money would be raised by charging the public entry into the royal castles and Buckingham Palace. Queen Elizabeth II also contributed her own money to the repairs.
