Over a long career, Hartley transitioned from the neo-impressionist style of landscapes like this one from his native Maine, to the pinwheeling, coded abstractions made during World War I, when he lived in Germany, to his weighty and heavily outlined figures and landscapes of the late 1930s and early 40s.
