Professor Benjamin Howard Rand, Thomas Eakins, 1874
In 2007 Walton attempted to purchase from a Philadelphia medical school one of the greatest 19th century American paintings, Thomas Eakins' The Gross Clinic. Though two Philadelphia art institutions joined forces to keep it in their city at a joint cost of $68 million she was later able to buy from the school this first-rate portrait of man of both intellect and feeling. (As he reads a book, he pets his watchful cat.) Rand was Eakins' high school chemistry teacher before he joined the medical school faculty.
