Trouble at the Yard
The force suffered a tremendous blow to its reputation in 2005, when its officers mistook a Brazilian electrician, Jean Charles de Menezes, for a suicide bomber and shot him fatally. The incident occurred just 15 days after terror attacks in London claimed the lives of more than 50 people, and the officers said that the man, who was wearing bulky clothing, looked like one of the suspects in their investigation. During the 2007 inquiry into the shootings, Scotland Yard's commissioner, Sir Ian Blair faced questioning by the London Assembly, above. Though no individual officers were charged, the force itself was found guilty and forced to pay a fine of $350,000, plus costs of $770,000.
