An Englishman in New York
Sir Mark Lyall Grant, U.K. Ambassador, United Nations
Someone said to me, who have you done politically and I was thinking, aren't they all in D.C. and I was reminded that the U.N.'s in New York. His Press Secretary said he was quite tickled by the idea and would love to do it. I went, as I always do, a couple of hours early, and got shown round. I'm looking at all these offices and the building is quite amazing. But of course, that room is what you always see on TV and I don't know why, I just sort of assumed there would be a session on and we couldn't get in there. And we'd seen all these rooms and then the Press Secretary said to me nonchalantly, "oh I don't know, maybe you would prefer to do it here, I just thought it was a bit obvious." And I said, "obvious isn't always bad! Pardon me for being predictable but I think this is the spot."
