The Otherworldly Work of West Virginia's Green Bank Radio Telescope

The giant Green Bank Telescope is just one of several instruments at the
Observatory, Beginning in 1957, when the Observatory became operational,
the National Radio Astronomy Observatory has erected a number of radio
telescope for use by visiting astronomers. This 140-foot diameter
instrument built in the 1960's remains the largest equatorial telescope in
the world. It was the first to discover signals from formaldehyde in
interstellar space. It was retired from general use when the Green Bank
Telescope began operations, but was subsequently refurbished and is now
used for studies of the ionosphere.
