The Otherworldly Work of West Virginia's Green Bank Radio Telescope
Michael Soluri
Local Transport
In order to collect the faintest possible signals the telescope is
surrounded by a unique, federally-mandated radio quiet zone, where all
radio transmitters (except those needed for emergencies) are coordinated
so as not to interfere with telescope operations. Because radio emissions
from modern cars can swamp the faint signals coming from the Universe,
workers at the facility get around on bicycles and in diesel vehicles like
this 1960s-era Checker.
