In broad daylight on March 30, 1981, John Hinckley Jr. fired six bullets at President Ronald Reagan. One of Hinckley's bullets, which struck Reagan under his left arm, malfunctioned and failed to explode, leaving the President wounded but not dead. Also harmed in the attack were Press Secretary James Brady, a police officer and a Secret Service agent In his twisted mind, the 25-year-old Hinckley, who attempted to kill Reagan in order to gain the attention and adoration of actress Jodie Foster, called his act "the greatest love offering in the history of the world."
