Italian Fascism found in the classical revival a house style for its worship of authority and pretensions to empire. An ardent follower of Mussolini, who would certainly be understood as the man on horseback referred to in the title, Sironi hoped that monumental wall paintings like this one were the best way to impress Fascist ideas upon the masses.
