"Chaos and Classicism" at the Guggenheim

The Four Elements: Fire, Water and Earth, Air, Adolf Ziegler, before 1937
Adolf Hitler, himself a failed painter, chose this awkwardly posed but meticulously painted allegory of the elements to go above the mantelpiece in his Munich apartment. To him it epitomized the idealization of racially pure men and women that he believed was the purpose of art.
