Pledging himself to "a New Deal for the American people," New York governor Roosevelt launches his 1932 presidential campaign at the Democratic National Convention. In an election year when many banks failed, industrial production was in a tailspin and unemployment was at about 25 percent, Roosevelt and the Democrats swept the polls to launch a legislative program that would transform the relationship between government and governed. At his inauguration, Roosevelt confidently declared that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself."
