In a September 24 election, Vojislav Kostunica, head of the Democratic Party of Serbia, had seemingly ended the autocratic 13-year rule of Slobodan Milosevic. But Yugoslavia's Federal Election Commission reported 48.22 percent for Kostunica, 40.23 percent for Milosevic. A runoff was called. The opposition cried fraud, saying Kostunica had won nearly 55 percent of the vote. A week of protests, culminating here in the storming of the Parliament in Belgrade on Oct. 5, forced Milosevic to back down.
