The bilateral meetings that had led to SALT resulted in the development of another treaty, dubbed SALT II. Signed in 1979, the agreement was never ratified by the U.S. Senate, though its terms were honored by both sides. In 1987 the U.S. destroyed a number of Titan II missiles, above, in accordance with the treaty, though critics observed that these ICBMs were more or less obsolete by that time.
