Chicago under Daley re-emerged as a primary tourist destination, reclaiming its reputation as one of America's most glamorous cities. The mayor, seen above at a White Sox baseball game in 1996, enjoyed one of his greatest political and personal successes when, that same year, he presided over the return to Chicago of the Democratic National Convention the event that 18 years before had so tarnished the reputation of his father.
