The task presents an extraordinary challenge: the drill must strike a tiny target more than 3 miles (5 km) beneath the surface of the ocean. As of July 20, the main relief well was less than 5 ft. (1.5 m) from its goal. "We're absolutely perfectly positioned," says BP vice president Kent Wells, who is leading the effort.
