Montreal, 1967: National Geometry
Countries that choose to participate in a World's Fair erect a pavilion that characterizes the nation's culture and ideals. For the 1967 International and Universal Exposition in Montreal, American architect and futurist Buckminster Fuller was chosen to design the U.S. pavilion. What emerged was a 200-ft. (70 m) rendition of Fuller's iconic geodesic dome. Although a fire in 1976 burned the transparent acrylic that skinned the dome, the steel lattice remains today as part of a local museum.
