Edgar Miller and the Handmade Home
Alexander Vertikoff
The Frank Fisher Apartments
Commissioned by Frank Fisher, an executive at Marshall Field and Co., the building at 1209 North State Parkway was Miller's final residential project. The only house that Miller built from scratch, the Fisher building was advertised as the first air-conditioned apartment house in Chicago and one of the first in the nation. In carrying out the design, Miller collaborated with architect Andrew Rebori, his partner for a number of projects, including the very successful and controversial "Streets of Paris" exhibit at the 1933 Century of Progress world's fair, which included an attraction that invited visitors of both sexes to sketch nearly naked women.
