Not surprisingly, the residue from coal burning proved key to illustrating the end of the world. This scene was staged at a Fly Ash reclamation site in southwestern Pennsylvania. "It was eye opening on many levels to be working on top thousands of acres of spent coal ash that came from power plants," says Ullman. "It was a devasted landscape."
