Adopted several times for the screen as animated features, Ludwig Bemelmans' tales of "twelve little girls in two straight lines," of which "the smallest one was Madeline," came to life in 1998, with Hatty Jones (front left) as the title character, and Frances McDormand as the disapproving headmistress, Miss Clavel.
