For 15 days in February 2005, the park hosted the "Gates" project, a creation by the artist Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude. Covering 23 miles of footpaths with more than 7,000 saffron-colored vinyl gates, the $21 million endeavor drew a mixed reaction from New Yorkers, ranging from delighted appreciation to measured distress.
