The photographer traveled to Washington DC to make this portrait. "Karzai was really pumped to be photographed. He was staying at Blair House, across the street from the White House, where many visiting heads of state stay, and he comes in with this big hat and traditional dress. He was very western in many ways, so he offered to change, but I said no. Afterwards, he invited us to stay for lunch, which was very kind."
