Barrage balloon guard against flying bombs, set up over England's skies, Sept. 8, 1944. Installed by RAF Balloon Command, barrage balloons were chained to the ground to create an obstacle to low-level bombing raids by the Luftwaffe, and also in the hope of stopping Germany's pilotless rockets being fired from Europe.
