Douglas Bader, who lost both his legs in a pre-war flying accident in 1931, poses with his Hurricane fighter, Oct. 10, 1940. He became a legendary Wing Commander of a fighter squadron thanks to his exploits during the Battle of Britain. A year later, Bader leader collided with a German Messerschmitt fighter and spent much of the war held captive at the infamous Colditz prison.
