In an effort to resolve the standoff over the state of emergency, the U.S. is sending Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte to Islamabad later this week to meet with General Musharraf. And another exiled former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, is also emerging once again as a key player. On Tuesday, Bhutto reached out to him in calling for a united opposition to Musharraf. Sharif was overthrown by Musharraf in 1999, but was also a bitter political foe of Benazir Bhutto.
